SMTube is a new method for measuring the tear volume in 5 seconds. With such a short screening time, your patient workload is streamlined to meet demand and increase performance. Developed to help medical staff carry out meniscometry testing with ease and accuracy by providing the tool for a quick understanding when dry eye treatment is needed.
By adopting the SMTube method, highly recommended by professionals, your clinic can improve quality of care and reduce the length of stay. Statistically speaking an efficient workflow improves not only patient care quality, but it also uses medical staff effectively and saves money.
Simply put, SMTube (Strip Meniscometry Tube) is a layered thin strip, with a hollow tube structure along its length to absorb tears, filled with the blue dye & absorber. It has a printed scale on both sides of the absorber to measure the tear meniscus volume, and each strip is sterilely packaged. The material is designed to ensure ocular safety if the tip of the strip touches the cornea or the conjunctival sac.
The SMTube development comes as a result of extensive studies of the tear meniscus volume (TMV) within the parameters of the ‘true’ state of the ocular surface. In fact, SMTube is minimally invasive compared to the old Schirmer test.
Tear volume screening is a significant factor for the diagnosis of dry eye as retaining tear stability depends on the amount of tear volume, explains Dr Kazuo Tsubota from Keio University, in the video above.
Below is a quick comparison between the Schirmer test and SMTube test:
There are two quick and easy methods for a dry eye diagnosis in 5 seconds; in both cases, no anaesthetic eye drops need to be used. A healthcare professional assistant or nurse can perform a dry eye screening, as no training is required, watch the procedure in the video. Alternatively, an Ophthalmologist or Optometrist can perform the diagnosis by using a slit lamp.
