Preventing infections and following a safe guide at work has always been a priority in ophthalmic and optical clinics. During this challenging time, in particular with the spread of COVID-19, we rely on extra practices of prevention. With this in mind, we would like to bring your attention to cleaning and disinfecting TAKAGI ophthalmic devices.
As a standard recommendation, to minimise the risk of contamination during eye examinations and surgeries, TAKAGI advises the use of face masks for doctors and patients. We also recommend reinforcing the practice of maintaining a good standard of hand hygiene and using gloves.
Depending on the type of material the product is made of, please follow the guide below:
Products made of metal & resin
Disinfect with rubbing alcohol all TAKAGI devices made of metal and resin, such as the following: Slit Lamps, Operating Microscopes, Imaging Systems & Diagnostic & Specialist Equipment; except for measuring prisms (S12-18) and the inside of the perimeter bowl (MT-325UD Projection Perimeter).
It is recommended to disinfect with rubbing alcohol (70-90% volume ethanol) on the whole external part of the products. This solution is considered to be an effective way to sanitise the products and kill bacteria and viruses, including COVID-19.
Please pay particular attention to avoid alcohol entering into the equipment and dry off any residue of water or alcohol. It is essential to keep the devices dry after disinfecting them as water and alcohol remains may cause adverse effects to the products, including malfunction.
Do not disinfect with rubbing alcohol any parts of the products made of leather, such as the Ophthalmic Chairs. It is advised to clean the leather parts with diluted bleach (0.05% sodium hypochlorite) following the dilution proportions and wet contact time depending on the product instructions.
MT-325UD Projection Perimeter – Wipe the perimeter bowl with a soft cloth very gently and ask patients to wear a face mask while using it. Do not disinfect the inside of the perimeter bowl with rubbing alcohol as it would cause severe irreversible damage to the surface and affect its accuracy.
S12-18 Measuring Prism – Clean the prism under cold running drinkable water for 30”-60” then disinfect it with (Hydrogen peroxide at a 3% aqueous solution or sodium hypochlorite at 10% aqueous solution) then rinse it again with cold running drinkable water for 5”-15”. Finally, dry the prism with a clean, soft cloth before placing it into a disinfected storage box.
